Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta reached the final of the Montreal Masters by defeating Daniel Evans 7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-2 at Stade IGA on Sunday night.
Carreno Busta, ranked No 23, will play Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 8 seed, next.
Carreno Busta reaches his first career Masters 1000 final and will bid to become the first unseeded men’s singles champion in Canada since Guillermo Canas in 2002.
The Spaniard won against Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 11 seed (6-3, 6-2), Dane Holger Rune (6-0, 6-3), Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 7 seed (6-2, 6-4) and qualifier Jack Draper (7-6 (4), 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Coupe Rogers, Evans, ranked No 39, beat Serb Filip Krajinovic (6-2, 1-6, 6-0), Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 5 seed (6-4, 6-4), American Taylor Fritz, the No 10 seed (7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-5) and American Tommy Paul (1-6, 6-3, 6-4).
