Italian Luciano Darderi lost out to Tommy Paul (6-4, 7-6 (2)), No. 12 in the world, in a close straight sets match at Stade IGA on Wednesday afternoon. Despite only being broken once, Darderi could not convert on any of his three break points, and losing a one sided tie-break in the crucial second set.
On the other hand, Paul will face the winner of the match between home country hero wildcard Denis Shapovalov and American qualifier Brandon Nakashima next.
