Montreal Masters: Nakashima upsets bronze medallist Paul

Qualifier Brandon Nakashima moved into the last 16 of the Montreal Masters by winning against No 10 seed Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1.
Paul recently won a bronze medal in the men’s doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games alongside Taylor Fritz, but put up a valiant fight in the second set to edge a close tie-break. In the third, Nakashima looked the far fresher American on court.
Nakashima, ranked No 52, will face Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 5 seed, next.
Brandon Nakashima defeated Canadian wildcard Denis Shapovalov (6-4, 7-5) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.
In the previous round of the Rogers Cup, Paul, ranked No 12, won against Italian Luciano Darderi (6-4, 7-6 (2)).
