Montreal Masters: Arnaldi reaches quarter-finals as Davidovich Fokina retires in the third
Matteo Arnaldi benefited from the retirement of Davidovich Fokina (4-6, 7-6 (5), 3-0) and will play Japanese Kei Nishikori in the next round
Italian Matteo Arnaldi moved into the last eight of the Montreal Masters when Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired at Stade IGA.
Arnaldi, ranked No 46, led 4-6, 7-6 (5), 3-0 when Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 42, pulled out at Stade IGA on Saturday evening.
The Italian will play Japanese Kei Nishikori next.
Matteo Arnaldi edged out American qualifier Mackenzie McDonald (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) and beat Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 16 seed (7-5, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Rogers Cup.
Earlier in the tournament, the Spaniard won against Russian Roman Safiullin (6-2, 7-5) and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed (6-4, 1-6, 6-2).
