“I trust myself a lot” – Bublik puts faith in unique game style during big moments
The Kazakh won the Open Sud de France title on Sunday, his second trophy in Montpellier and the fourth of his burgeoning career
Alexander Bublik has revealed that trusting his unique style of tennis in the big moments has been key to him finding success in recent months.
Just since last June, the Kazakh has grown his trophy tally from one to four – winning a first 500-level event at Halle last summer, before adding two more 250s in Antwerp and Montpellier.
In the aftermath of his victory over Borna Coric in the Open Sud de France final, Bublik was asked about his tendency to go for big second serves when facing break points – not to mention the underarm serves and his flamboyant brand of entertaining, trick-shot tennis.
“Well, if you watch my matches, I didn’t do it for the first time, you know,” the Kazakh said during his post-match press conference.
“So I guess that’s that’s how I play. That’s how I feel I. I trust myself a lot.
“It was paying off for me a lot of times. Of course, it brought me down as well, but I think that’s what tennis and life is all about.
“You know, sometimes it’s working, sometimes not. But you’ve just got to keep going.”
Bublik added that he believed it was “destiny” to lift the trophy in Montpellier, following a remarkable title run which saw him come from a set down to win in every match he played at the tournament.
Destiny may be one word for it, but there is no denying a clear trajectory for talented Kazakh as his trophy-haul continues to grow at an accelerating pace and he sits just below a career-best ranking.
keeping the momentum now crucial for bublik
For Bublik, however, he has seen how big successes can quickly be followed by difficult periods.
“You know, after Halle and Wimbledon, I was like, ‘Okay, I’m playing well, I can continue like this’. And then I lost six in a row in the first round,” he explained.
“So and I’m not sure that I have changed something, you know, I was still practising. I was still really dedicated to what I’m doing.
“But I think in tennis is like this. You’ve just got to keep the momentum and just, you know, use your chances.
“This is the most important thing. So for me, I just try to relax.”
Whatever follows for Bublik in the coming months, this has been a highly successful week for him. As the titles and ranking continue to rise, the Kazakh’s mind will surely turn towards achieving even greater rewards.
One thing feels certain, however. He is going to do it his way, with his own unique brand of swashbuckling tennis.
