Montpellier Open: De Jong eases past Cobolli to make his first ATP quarter-final
Jesper De Jong beat Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 7-6 (2) and will play the winner of the match between Tallon Griekspoor and Richard Gasquet in the next round
Jesper De Jong beat Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 3 seed, 6-3, 7-6 (2) to move into the quarter-finals of the Montpellier Open at the Sud de France Arena.
It is the Dutchman’s career-first appearance in the quarter-final of an ATP event.
Today’s victory over the world No 34 also represents De Jong’s best win in terms of ranking, with his previous best being over Jack Draper at Roland-Garros last year when the Briton was ranked 39th in the world.
De Jong, ranked No 131, will play the winner of the match between Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the No 5 seed, and Frenchman Richard Gasquet next.
Ahead of his victory, the Dutchman benefited from the abandonment of French wildcard Quentin Halys (7-6 (7), 2-0).
