Montpellier Open: Bublik makes semi-finals, comes back v Shevchenko
Alexander Bublik edged out Alexander Shevchenko 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday. He’ll face the winner of the match between French wildcard Harold Mayot and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 3 seed, in the next round
Second seed Alexander Bublik moved into the semi-finals of the Montpellier Open by edging out No 6 seed Alexander Shevchenko 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Sud de France Arena on Friday afternoon.
The first set went the way of Shevchenko, with five breaks of serve in the ten games.
But Bublik came back to win his fifth ATP Tour quarter-final since the start of 2023.
“He is an upcoming player. He has beaten a lot of top players already. I was putting every effort in and I got lucky at the end,” Bublik said. “I didn’t serve any double faults on the break points and I am happy with the win.”
Bublik, ranked No 27, will play the winner of the match between French wildcard Harold Mayot and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 3 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Montpellier tournament, Alexander Bublik won against Canadian Denis Shapovalov (1-6, 7-6 (12), 6-3).
Shevchenko, ranked No 59, edged out qualifier Dalibor Svrcina (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) and defeated Frenchman Gregoire Barrere (7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
