Monte-Carlo Masters: Sinner saves match point en route to a thrilling victory against Hurkacz
Jannik Sinner defeated Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1 on Thursday and will play the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 16 seed, in the next round
Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 7 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters by winning against Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 10 seed, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1 at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Thursday.
Hurkacz dominated the first set and had match point in the second-set tiebreak but Sinner saved it with a brilliant backhand after a long rally. The Italian then pinched the set and ran away with the third to set up a possible clash with world No 1 Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic, the top seed, plays Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 16 seed, next.
The 21-year-old Italian benefited from the abandonment of Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (6-0, 3-1) in the previous round.
In the previous rounds, Hurkacz, ranked No 13, edged out Serb Laslo Djere (6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5)) and Jack Draper (6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-5).
