Monte-Carlo Masters: Rune makes last eight after Berrettini withdraws due to injury
Holger Rune benefited from the forfeit of Matteo Berrettini on Thursday afternoon and will play the winner of the match between Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, and German Alexander Zverev, the No 13 seed, in the next round
Dane Holger Rune, the No 6 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters after Italian Matteo Berrettini withdrew before the match at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Thursday afternoon.
“I don’t know where to start….I was finally finding my level and getting back to where I wanted to be….this is a difficult one. I’m very sad to announce I will not be able to play my match today in Monte Carlo. I felt some pain in my obliques during my match yesterday,” Berrettini said on Instagram.
“The pain became significantly worse overnight. After consulting with my medical team we decided to have an MRI scan this morning. I have a grade 2 tear in my internal oblique muscle. I can’t thank you all enough for the support. It means so much and is what gets me through these difficult times.”
Rune, ranked No 9, will face the winner of the match between Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, and German Alexander Zverev, the No 13 seed, next.
The 19-year-old Dane won against Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem (6-2, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Berrettini, ranked No 22, beat American Maxime Cressy (6-4, 6-2) and edged out Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo (5-7, 7-6 (1), 6-4).
