Monte-Carlo Masters: Medvedev overcomes Monfils and umpire drama to make last 16

Daniil Medvedev, the No 4 seed, reached the last 16 of the Monte-Carlo Masters by beating French wildcard Gael Monfils 6-2, 6-4 at Monte-Carlo Country Club.

It was a strong performance from the Russian, who was able to silence the Monaco crowd after a tempestuous run-in with the umpire.

A ball from Monfils was erroneously overruled as in by the umpire, having initially and correctly been called out. A hawk-eye replay then showed the ball was in fact out, but this was not shown inside the stadium.

Despite losing his temper amid the on-court drama, it was a clinical performance from the Russian as home hope Monfils struggled to break down Medvedev’s supreme defence on slow clay courts.

Medvedev, ranked No 4, will play Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 15 seed, next.

Monfils, ranked No 40, edged out Australian lucky loser Aleksandar Vukic (6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-5) in the previous round of the Monte-Carlo tournament.
