Monte-Carlo Masters: Khachanov upsets fuming Medevdev to reach quarter-finals
The Russian will play the winner of the match between German Alexander Zverev, the No 5 seed, and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 12 seed, in the next round
No 15 seed Karen Khachanov upset No 4 seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the last eight of the ATP Monte-Carlo Masters in Monaco on Thursday.
Khachanov started the match strong by breaking in the eighth game – the only break in the set – before serving the set out 6-3. In the second, both players held serve for the first 10 games with Khachanov saving a set point in the 10th game before breaking in the 11th game.
Khachanov then held his serve to complete the 6-3, 7-5 win in one hour 54 minutes. This was only his second win over his more accomplished countryman in seven career meetings.
This was also the former world No 8’s first win over a top-5 ranked player on clay, after losing his first nine.
For the second match in a row, a furious Medvedev hit out at the officials during the match, this time earning a point penalty when Khachanov started to serve for the match in the 12th game of the second set. His outburst was triggered by a bad line call at 5-5, 15-30 while serving, following which he hit a double fault to lose his serve.
The world No 17 will next face the winner of the match between German Alexander Zverev, the No 5 seed, and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 12 seed.
Khachanov won against Cameron Norrie (7-5, 7-6 (3)) and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) earlier in the week.
In the previous round of the tournament, Medvedev, ranked No 4, won against French wildcard Gael Monfils (6-2, 6-4).
