Monte-Carlo Masters: De Minaur into quarter-finals, could face Djokovic next
Alex De Minaur defeated Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday and will face the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the next round
No 11 seed Alex de Minaur beat Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Thursday.
De Minaur, ranked No 11, will play the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Italian Lorenzo Musetti next.
He is the first Australian quarter-finalist at Monte-Carlo in 25 years – since Mark Philippoussis in 1999.
It will be his third Masters 1000 quarter-final, following two last year – in Toronto, where he made the final, and Paris.
Alex de Minaur won against Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka (6-3, 6-0) and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Popyrin, ranked No 46, defeated French qualifier Corentin Moutet (3-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 6 seed (6-4, 6-4).
