Medvedev ends Eubanks run to reach semi-finals in Miami
Daniil Medvedev defeated Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday and will face the winner of the match between Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 25 seed, and Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 14 seed, in the next round
Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 4 seed, reached the semi-finals of the Miami Masters by beating American qualifier Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 7-5 at the Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday
Medvedev, ranked No 5, will face the winner of the match between Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 25 seed, and Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 14 seed, next.
The Russian has now won 22 of his past 23 matches, having won three straight tournaments before losing out to Carlos Alcaraz in the final in Indian Wells last time out.
Games were on serve to 3-2 when the players were halted by some light rain. When they resumed shortly after, Medvedev broke the American’s serve and cruised through the rest of the set.
Eubanks was appearing in his first Masters 1000 quarter-final and lifted his game again in the second set, forcing Medvedev to dig a little deeper for the win. But though both men struggled on second serve, Medvedev was stronger overall, hitting nine aces as he sealed the win.
The Russian won against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-1, 6-2), Slovak Alex Molcan (W/O) and Frenchman Quentin Halys (6-4, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Miami Open, Eubanks, ranked No 119, defeated Denis Kudla (7-6 (2), 6-2), Croat Borna Coric, the No 17 seed (3-6, 6-4, 6-2), Frenchman Gregoire Barrere (6-3, 7-6 (7)) and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (7-6 (2), 7-6 (5)).
