Miami Masters: Kyrgios crashes out to Khachanov

Karen Khachanov, the No 22 seed, beat Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (3), 6-0 in a lopsided second-round match to advance to the third round of the Miami Masters at the Hard Rock Stadium.

It was the pair’s first meeting since they played an epic at the 2022 US Open quarter-finals, which Khachanov won in five sets.

A tight and closely fought affair in the first set rapidly gave way to a one-sided contest as Kyrgios faded physically to allow the Russian to breeze to the second set and move into the third round.

Both players held firm on serve in the opener, with Kyrgios unable to convert two break points on his opponent’s serve. A tiebreak was required to separate the two, but it was Khachanov who seized the moment, surging to take the break 7-3 and leave an ailing Kyrgios with a comeback on his hands.

It was a comeback that never looked likely to materialise, as the Australian’s serve capitulated. All three breaks of serve for Khachanov came in the second set as he cantered to a bagel second-set win.

Khachanov, ranked No 23, will play Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 14 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Miami Open, Nick Kyrgios edged out American qualifier Mackenzie McDonald (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).
