Miami Masters: Ruusuvuori upsets van de Zandschulp in close epic, faces Sinner next
Emil Ruusuvuori edged out Botic van de Zandschulp 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Tuesday. He’ll face Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 10 seed, in the next round
Finn Emil Ruusuvuori edged out Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, the No 26 seed, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the last 8 of the Miami Masters at the Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday.
The win makes Ruusuvuori the first Finnish man in a Masters 1000 quarter-final since Jarrko Nieminen reached the Monte-Carlo quarter-finals ten years ago.
It also means that van de Zandschulp fails in his quest to become the first Dutchman to reach the last eight in Miami since Richard Krajicek won the tournament in 1999.
Ruusuvuori, ranked No 54, will face Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 10 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the Finn beat Portuguese qualifier Nuno Borges (6-1, 6-4), Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No 22 seed (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and Japanese wildcard Taro Daniel (6-3, 7-6 (3)).
Van De Zandschulp, ranked No 32, won against Australian Alexei Popyrin (4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2) and edged out Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 3 seed (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
