Australian Christopher O’Connell edged past American home hope Frances Tiafoe, the No 21 seed, 7-5, 7-6 (5) to advance to the third round of the Miami Masters at the Hard Rock Stadium.
O’Connell, ranked No 66, will face wildcard Martin Damm next.
In the previous round of the Miami Open, the Australian defeated qualifier Vit Kopriva (6-2, 6-4).
