American Brandon Nakashima won against German Oscar Otte 7-6 (3), 6-3 to move into the second round of the Miami Masters at the Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday.
Nakashima, ranked No 45, will play No 20 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina next.
