Mexican Open: Tiafoe beats Spanish veteran Lopez to set up Fritz quarter-final
The American will face the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed, and Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the next round
American Frances Tiafoe, the No 6 seed, defeated Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 7-6 (6) to advance to the last eight of the Mexican Open at the Princess Mundo Imperial in Acapulco on Wednesday.
Ahead of his win today, the American had beaten Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka (7-6 (6), 6-4) in the first round of the tournament. With this win, Tiafoe improves to 10-2 for the season.
The 41-year-old Lopez, who was a wildcard entrant into the main draw, defeated American Christopher Eubanks (7-6 (3), 6-4) in the previous round of the Acapulco Open.
Tiafoe, ranked No 15 in the world, will play third seed Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals, after Fritz beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov next. Tiafoe holds a 5-1 edge over his compatriot in career head-to-head.
