Mexican Open: Rune through to semi-finals for second year in a row
The Dane will face the winner of the match between Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 6 seed, and American Ben Shelton in the last four
Demark’s Holger Rune, the second seed, won against German Dominik Koepfer 7-6 (2), 7-6 (0) to move into the last four of the Mexican Open at the Princess Mundo Imperial Resort in Acapulco on Thursday.
Rune is through to the semis in Acapulco for the second year in a row after a win over Koepfer in their first meeting on the tour. The Dane is looking for his first title at the ATP 500 level though he has won the Paris Masters title in 2022.
Rune, ranked No 7, is through to his 16th semi-final ono the tour (9-6 record so far) and will play the winner of the match between Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 6 seed, and American Ben Shelton next.
Ahead of his win today, the 20-year-old Dane defeated American qualifier Michael Mmoh (6-2, 6-3) and American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic (7-6 (5), 6-2). With the win, Rune also improves to 10-0 when he has won the first set of a match.
Koepfer, ranked No 58, won against French qualifier Terence Atmane (6-4, 4-6, 6-0) and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 8 seed (6-4, 5-7, 6-1) earlier in the tournament. With his run this week, Koepfer will climb to a new career-high ranking next week and is projected to break into the top 50 for the first time in his career.
