Mexican Open: Rune sets up Berrettini showdown in quarter-finals
The 19-year-old Dane defeated Nuno Borges 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the last eight
Danish teen Holger Rune, the No 4 seed, reached the last eight of the Mexican Open by beating Portuguese Nuno Borges 6-0, 6-2 at the Princess Mundo Imperial in Acapulco on Wednesday night.
Rune, ranked No 10 in the world, will face former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, of Italy, next. The Italian has a 1-0 lead over Rune in their head-to-head, winning their round of 64 clash at Indian Wells last year in three sets. Rune, however, has been the man in form with wins in 29 of his last 35 matches dating back to September 2022.
The 19-year-old Dane defeated American wildcard Ben Shelton (6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-2) in his first match this week.
In the previous round of the Acapulco Open, Borges, ranked No 85, beat American qualifier Nick Chappell (6-3, 7-6 (3)).
