Mexican Open: Kovacevic beats Los Cabos champ Thompson to reach second round
The American qualifier will play Dane Holger Rune, the second seed, in the next round

American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic edged out Australian Jordan Thompson 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to move into the second round of the Mexican Open at the Princess Mundo Imperial Resort in Acapulco on Tuesday.
Thompon had a quick turnaround from Los Cabos where he picked up is first ATP singles title on Sunday and also won the doubles in a Herculean effort which saw him three matches on the final day of the event.
Kovacevic, ranked No 93, will face Dane Holger Rune, the second seed, next.
