Mexican Open: Berrettini advances to quarter-finals, meets fourth seed Rune next
The world No 24 will play the winner of the match between Portuguese Nuno Borges and Dane Holger Rune, the No 4 seed, in the next round
Italian Matteo Berrettini won against Swede lucky loser Elias Ymer 6-3, 6-3 to move into the last eight of the Mexican Open at the Princess Mundo Imperial in Acapulco on Wednesday.
Berrettini, ranked No 24 in the world, was playing his first match since his five-set loss to Andy Murray in the first round of the Australian Open in mid-January.
He will face Holger Rune, the No 4 seed, next, after the 19-year-old Dane beat Portugal’s Nuno Borges in straight sets.
Ahead of his victory, the Italian had benefited from the retirement of Slovak Alex Molcan (6-0, 1-0).
Ymer, ranked No 170, edged out Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (5-7, 6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the Acapulco Open.
