Michael Russell, the coach of American Taylor Fritz, wins ATP Coach of the Year

Jakub Mensik was named ATP Newcomer of the Year while Matteo Berrettini was voted as ATP Comeback Player of the Year as part of the 2024 ATP Awards announced this week.

Mensik, aged 19 and from the Czech Republic, follows Arthur Fils, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz as recent winners of the Newcomer of the Year, which is voted for by the players.

“I’m super happy and honoured to be the Newcomer of the Year and win this ATP Award,” Mensik said as quoted by the ATP Tour. “I would like to say a big thank you for the votes, and to all of the fans around the world for your support and love. It really means a lot.”

The Czech reached his first ATP final in Doha in February and reached back-to-back quarter-finals in Shanghai Masters and Vienna at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Berrettini beat Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori to win the Comeback Player of the Year after rising from No 154 to the world’s top 40 in 2024.

“I’m just so happy to win the Comeback Player of the Year award,” Berrettini said as quoted by the ATP Tour. “Thank you very much for the support. It was a great season, a great effort for me and my team. Obviously so happy for the results that we achieved and I cannot wait to step on the court in 2025 to get more success.

The Italian won titles in Marrakech, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel and finished with a 32-12 record for the season.

France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was selected Most Improved Player of the Year after rising from outside the top 200 to the world’s top 30. The big-serving Frenchman won his first two ATP titles, Lyon and Basel, this year.

“I’m very happy to win the Most Improved Player award,” Mpetshi Perricard said as per the ATP Tour. “It was a good year for me and my team. Now we are looking [forward to] 2025.”

American Micheal Russell has been named ATP Coach of the Year, after taking his charge Taylor Fritz into the world’s top 5 and his first Grand Slam final at the US Open.
