Medvedev wins contentious Indian Wells quarter-final against Rune
Daniil Medvedev battled past Holger Rune in straight sets on Thursday at the Indian Wells Masters. Medvedev is through to the semi-finals to face Tommy Paul.
The most interesting development on Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open was a bee invasion that delayed Carlos Alcaraz’s win over Alexander Zverev by almost two hours.
However, the nightcap was not without drama of its down.
Daniil Medvedev picked up a 7-5, 6-4 quarter-final victory over Holger Rune, but not before there was an incident on the first point of the second set. Rune hit a ball right at Medvedev, who was at the net, and the Dane won the point a couple of exchanges later. Medvedev was upset because he thought his opponent had not apologized, so the Russian pulled up his shorts as high as he could prior to the next point to mock Rune’s short shorts. Following a brief discussion in which chair umpire Carlos Bernardes told Medvedev that Rune had indeed apologized, the two players shook hands in an effort to make up.
As for the on-court proceedings, Medvedev had the upper hand most of the way en route to a win that required one hour and 59 minutes. Rune briefly led by a break in the second set but could not sustain it.
Medvedev will face American Tommy Paul, the No 17 seed, on semi-final Saturday. Paul defeated Casper Ruud in three sets earlier in the day.
Earlier in the fortnight the world No 4 ousted Roberto Carballes Baena (6-2, 6-3), American Sebastian Korda, the No 29 seed (6-4, 5-7, 6-3) and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 13 seed (6-4, 6-4).
Rune, ranked No 7, advanced to the quarters by beating Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 26 seed (6-2, 7-6 (5)) and American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed (2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3). The Dane also got a second-round walkover from Milos Raonic.
