Russian Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, defeated French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Marseille Open at the Palais des sports on Thursday evening.

Playing his first 250-level event since 2023, Medvedev hit 19 winners against 13 unforced errors against the Frenchman in a rematch of the 2021 final. He improves to 3-2 overall on the season, after suffering a second-round loss to Learner Tien at the Australian Open and a second-round loss to Mattia Bellucci in Rotterdam.

“Pierre-Hugues is a very tough player,” Medvedev said. “Funny enough we played five times on tour and three times here in Marseille, so this is where we meet all the time.

“I’m happy that I managed to play a good level, didn’t lose my serve, and I’m happy to win.”
