Spain’s Carballes Baena lifts the trophy in Marrakech
Roberto Carballes Baena won the tournament on Sunday against Alexandre Muller
Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena lifted the Marrakech Open trophy by beating Frenchman Alexandre Muller 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 at the Royal Tennis Club de Marrakech on Sunday.
The Spaniard claims his second ATP title – and first since 2018 in Quito. Carballes Baena will rise to a career-high ranking of No 49 on Monday, per the ATP live rankings.
The 30-year-old went 4-0 in three-setters this week.
“I am so tired, but I am very, very happy. It was a very, very tough match,” Carballes Baena said on court after his win. “I tried to fight every point. I don’t know what to say. I am so happy.”
Ahead of his victory, Carballes Baena, ranked No 82, defeated American Maxime Cressy, the No 5 seed (6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-1), Bulgarian qualifier Dimitar Kuzmanov (2-0 ret.), Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the No 4 seed (6-3, 2-6, 6-2) and second seed Daniel Evans (2-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Muller, ranked No 126, beat No 6 seed Richard Gasquet (6-4, 6-4), Italian Francesco Passaro (6-4, 6-4), Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the top seed (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) and Russian Pavel Kotov (7-6 (3), 7-5) earlier in the tournament.
