Marozsan gets another top 10 scalp, dismisses De Minaur to make quarter-finals in Miami
The Hungarian will meet the winner of the match between German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, and Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 15 seed, in the next round
Hungarian Fabian Marozsan reached the last eight of the Miami Masters by beating Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 9 seed, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 at the Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday night.
Marozsan now, bizarrely, has the highest win percentage of any player to have contested 10 or more matches at the Masters 1000 level. Safe to say the Hungarian loves it at this level – he’s now 4-1 against top 10 opponents in his career as well.
Marozsan, ranked No 57, will play the winner of the match between German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, and Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 15 seed, next.
“It was a lot of ups and downs. It was a roller coaster” – Marozsan
The win will also take the Hungarian into the world’s top 40 next week for the first time. He also becomes the first Hungarian to claim multiple top 10 victories at a single event since the ATP rankings were first published in 1973.
“It was a lot of ups and downs. It was a roller coaster. I think the first set was very intense. Both of us played very high quality tennis,” the Hungarian told the media after his win. “I was very happy to win the first set. That gave me a little bit more boost and energy, but unfortunately, I lost the first game in the in the second set, and he just started to play very, very well. He did great in the second set, and I had no idea what to do in the last three or four games and I was a little bit down with the with the energy.”
“For the third set, we started with new balls. That was a big help for me. and I just held my serve. I won the first game in the third set, so I broke the bad rhythm That was important. And after that, when it was 1-1 and love 30. That was a turning point when I just came back from that moment and after that, I just played a few great points, and I just break him a little bit and when it was, like, 50-50 the points, everything just came to my side. That was the key to beat Alex today. He’s a great player, so I’m just very happy to beat him today. I’m just focusing on the next one. I try to recover tomorrow and doing my best in the next match.”
The Hungarian won against American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-3, 6-2), Dane Holger Rune, the No 6 seed (6-1, 6-1) and Australian Alexei Popyrin (7-5, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Miami Open, De Minaur, ranked No 10, defeated SoonWoo Kwon (6-3, 6-2) and German Jan-Lennard Struff, the No 24 seed (7-6 (3), 6-4).
