Frenchman Gael Monfils, the No 6 seed, defeated Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem 6-3, 7-6 (3) to reach the second round of the Mallorca Open at Mallorca Country Club.
Monfils, ranked No 40, will face Roberto Carballes Baena next.
