Kyrgios pulls out of Mallorca with abdominal pain: “I don’t want to risk Wimbledon”
The Australian said he did not want to make his abdominal pain any worse before Wimbledon begins on Monday
Nick Kyrgios faces a race against time to be fully fit for Wimbledon after pulling out of the Mallorca Open on Wednesday due to abdominal pain on the left side of his body.
The Australian, who reached the semi-finals of his two previous grass-court events, in Stuttgart and Halle, said he was pulling out as a precaution, with the tournament describing his injury as “discomfort in the rectus abdominis on the left side”.
“I’m really sorry I’m going to have to withdraw from tonight’s match (against Roberto-Bautista Agut) here in Mallorca,” Kyrgios said in a statement released by the tournament.
“I have been playing a lot of great matches lately and unfortunately I woke up with a pain in my abs. I went to see the tournament doctor right away and he advised that I don’t play tonight. I really value the Mallorca Championships but I will follow his advice as I don’t want to risk Wimbledon next week.”
The world No 45 will now head to Wimbledon, where he will be one of the most dangerous non-seeded players in Friday’s draw.
Javier Cerrato (Mallorca Championships Doctor): Nick Kyrgios suffers pain in the rectus abdominis on the left side due to the accumulation of matches in recent weeks and the effort of yesterday’s first round match. This will not allow him to return to the court tonight against Roberto Bautista.
