“Makes us hungry for the future” – Gilles Cervara on Daniil Medvedev’s US Open loss
During an Instagram live this Thursday, Gilles Cervara, coach of Daniil Medvedev, explained that the Russian was motivated to finish the 2023 season well
After a successful American summer with a quarter-final in Toronto and a final at the US Open—his fifth Grand Slam final—Daniil Medvedev is preparing for the final stretch of the 2023 season.
During an Instagram live organised this Thursday, his coach, Gilles Cervara, explained that the 27-year-old wanted to finish the year very well, and that the final in New York was a good springboard for the future.
“This US Open final makes us hungry. It gives us confidence, it gives us the desire to be able to perform well at the end of the season and in the tournaments,” said the Frenchman.
“The last five tournaments that we have left are still prestigious and important tournaments. So, I really hope that we will be good as a team, hoping that Daniil will perform very well.”
Medvedev doesn’t have many ATP points to defend
Physically exhausted after his great run at the US Open, Daniil Medvedev preferred to rest with his family rather than compete at UTS Frankfurt as planned. However, Gilles Cervara confirmed in his Instagram live that the two men had returned to training this week.
In 2022, Daniil Medvedev had difficulty continuing after the last Grand Slam of the season. While the Russian won a title in Vienna, he also lost in the first round of Metz and during the Rolex Paris Masters, before leaving the ATP Finals in the group stage, without any wins to his name.
The world No 3 can therefore gain valuable points over the remainder of the 2023 season.
Medvedev has only has 690 points to defend, compared to 2,850 for world No 1 Novak Djokovic. Among those at the top of the men’s rankings, only Carlos Alcaraz, who was injured this time last year, has fewer points to defend than Medvedev with only 360 points.
