Madrid Masters: Zverev through to last 16, drops just one game against Grenier
Alexander Zverev won against Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 on Sunday afternoon. He’ll face the winner of the match between Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 26 seed, in the next round
German Alexander Zverev, the No 13 seed, defeated French qualifier Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 to reach the last 16 of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Magica on Sunday.
The Frenchman was looking for his first top 20 win; instead Zverev extended his Madrid record to 21 wins and just six defeats.
He became the first German man to secure 50 match wins on clay at ATP Masters 1000 level, with a win rate of 76.9% – the fifth-best record since the format began in 1990.
Zverev, ranked No 16, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 26 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the German won against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-0).
Grenier, ranked No 128, beat Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (7-5, 6-4) and American Sebastian Korda, the No 22 seed (7-6 (5), 7-6 (7)) earlier in the tournament.
