Chinese Zhizhen Zhang moved into the second round of the Madrid Masters by beating Austrian qualifier Jurij Rodionov 7-6 (6), 6-4 at the Caja Magica on Thursday.
Zhang, ranked No 99, will face No 21 seed Denis Shapovalov next.
