Madrid Masters: Monteiro ends Tsitsipas’s run, reaches third round
Thiago Monteiro defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday. He’ll play the winner of the match between No 30 seed Jiri Lehecka and Serb qualifier Hamad Medjedovic in the next round
Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro reached the third round of the Madrid Masters by taking his fourth match point and beating Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed, 6-4, 6-4 at the Caja Magica on Saturday.
Tsitsipas’s form on clay this year has been wonderful, with his statistics now standing at 10-2, having won Monte-Carlo and reached the Barcelona final, where he lost to Casper Ruud.
The two had never played each other before – but Monteiro’s record against players ranked in the Top 10 is quite impressive for a man with a career high of world No 61, now with four wins and six defeats.
Monteiro, ranked No 118, will play the winner of the match between No 30 seed Jiri Lehecka and Serb qualifier Hamad Medjedovic next.
The Brazilian beat Serb Dusan Lajovic (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
