Medvedev completes full set of Masters 1000 quarter-finals with win over Bublik in Madrid
Daniil Medvedev won against Alexander Bublik 7-6 (3), 6-4 on Tuesday. He’ll play the winner of the match between Spaniard Rafael Nadal and No 30 seed Jiri Lehecka in the next round
Russian Daniil Medvedev became only the 10th active player to reach at least the quarter-finals of all nine Masters 1000 events as he beat Alexander Bublik, the No 17 seed, 7-6 (3), 6-4 to reach the last eight at the Caja Magica on Tuesday.
Medvedev, ranked No 4, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Rafael Nadal and No 30 seed Jiri Lehecka next.
“It was a tough match, a lot of drop shots,” Medvedev said. “I got so tired in the end and that’s when you start to lose concentration and that’s what happened. But he told me in the end he was dead as well so it was OK. It was a bit up and down but I’m happy I was able to come out on top.”
Bublik led by an early break in the first set but couldn’t maintain it long enough to put real pressure on Medvedev, who won the first six points of the tiebreak before taking it 7-3.
The Russian then raced ahead 3-0 and 5-2 in the third and though Bublik got one of the breaks back, he couldn’t get the second and Medvedev sealed the win.
Medvedev edged out Italian Matteo Arnaldi (2-6, 6-4, 6-4) and defeated American Sebastian Korda, the No 25 seed (5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Bublik, ranked No 18, beat Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (1-6, 6-2, 6-2) and edged out American Ben Shelton, the No 14 seed (3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4).
