German lucky loser Daniel Altmaier reached his first ever Masters 1000 quarter-final as he beat Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-0 at the Caja Magica on Tuesday.
Altmaier, ranked No 92, will face the winner of the match between Croat Borna Coric, the No 17 seed, and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 29 seed, next.
The German won against Oscar Otte (6-4, 7-5) and qualifier Yannick Hanfmann (7-6 (3), 6-3) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Munar, ranked No 88, defeated Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (7-6 (7), 7-6 (3)), Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the No 30 seed (7-6 (3) ret.) and Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi (3-6, 6-3, 6-1).
