Los Cabos Open: Tsitsipas beats De Minaur to win first title of the year
The Greek improved to 10-0 lifetime against De Minaur with the win on Saturday
Top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, of Greece, won the Los Cabos Open final by beating Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 5 seed, 6-3, 6-4 at the Cabo del Mar Sports Center on Saturday.
Tsitsipas broke De Minaur early in each set but both times the Australian found a way to bring it back to 3-3. In each set, the Greek broke for a second time to win in straight sets in one hour and 26 minutes.
This was Tsitipas’ first singles title of 2023 and the 10th of his career.
“I feel like both of us wanted to go out on the court today and show a great final,” said Tsitsipas in his on-court interview. “I feel like it was a great match. Alex showed great tennis, I tried to keep up with the level as much as I could. I’m really happy we were able to deliver a great final today. I think that is the thing that stands out the most. It was a great match and the crowd, as always, was fully present and engaged.”
Tsitsipas, ranked No 5, defeated American John Isner (6-2, 6-4), Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 6 seed (6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-2) and Croat Borna Coric, the No 4 seed (6-3, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, De Minaur, ranked No 19, defeated Tunisian qualifier Skander Mansouri (6-4, 6-4), Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante (6-2, 6-1), American Tommy Paul, the No 3 seed (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) and German Dominik Koepfer, the No 7 seed (6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1).
