Medvedev sets up Kecmanovic showdown in Los Cabos semis
Medvedev is now two wins away from securing the world No 1 ranking until after the US Open
Russian Daniil Medvedev, the world’s top-ranked player, defeated Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis in straight sets to reach the semi-finals of the Los Cabos Open at the Cabo del Mar Sports Center on Friday evening.
Medvedev, who is also the top seed this week, won 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 21 minutes.
The 26-year-old Russian will face fourth seeded Serb Miomir Kecmanovic for a place in the final.
“Love hard courts” (Medvedev)
This was Medvedev’s second consecutive straight sets win this week, having beaten Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata (6-4, 6-3) in the second round after a first round bye.
“I like playing on hard courts. I’m playing great here so far,” Medvedev said as quoted by the ATP Tour. “Of course the further you go, the tougher the matches, the tougher the opponents, more pressure. But that’s what we like and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
The Russian, who is looking to win his first title of the season, will secure the No 1 ranking until after the US Open if he wins the title in Los Cabos this week.
Medvedev and Kecmanovic have played once before with the Russian winning their third round clash at Roland-Garros earlier this year in straight sets.
