Japan Open: Shapovalov through to quarter-finals

Denis Shapovalov beat Rio Noguchi 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday and will play Croat Borna Coric, the No 9 seed, in the next round

Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 7 seed, defeated Japanese qualifier Rio Noguchi 6-3, 6-1 to move into the last 8 of the Japan Open at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Thursday.

Shapovalov, ranked No 22, will play Croat Borna Coric, the No 9 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Tokyo Open, the Canadian won against American Steve Johnson (6-3, 7-6 (3)).

Noguchi, ranked No 291, edged out Indian qualifier Ramkumar Ramanathan (6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (1)) during the first round of the Tokyo Open.
