Top seed Casper Ruud, of Norway, was bounced out of the ATP Japan Open in Tokyo on Tuesday by Spain’s Jaume Munar in straight sets.

Munar, the 25-year-old who is ranked No 58 in the world, won 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 35 minutes at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo. Ruud was able to convert only one of five break points while Munar converted four of seven break points in the match.

Early exit for Casper Ruud for second week in a row

This was the second consecutive week that Ruud, who climbed to No 2 in the world rankings after reaching his second Grand Slam final of the year at the US Open, had an earlier than expected exit on the tour. Ruud was defeated in the Seoul quarter-finals last week to Yoshihito Nishioka, who went on to win the title. The Norwegian is now ranked No 3 in the world.

Munar, who had lost all three prior meetings against the 23-year-old Ruud (all of which had come on clay), will meet fellow Spaniard Pedro Martinez next.
