Japan Open: Mochizuki moves into quarter-finals, shocks top seed Fritz
Shintaro Mochizuki edged out Taylor Fritz 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) on Thursday and will face Australian Alexei Popyrin in the next round
Japanese wildcard Shintaro Mochizuki advanced to the last eight of the Japan Open by edging out American Taylor Fritz, the top seed, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Thursday.
Mochizuki is the only Japanese man left in the field, and this was his first-ever top 10 win – indeed, only the second ATP Tour win of his career.
Mochizuki, ranked No 215, will play Australian Alexei Popyrin next.
Ahead of his victory, the 20-year-old Japanese beat Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (6-4, 7-6 (5)).
Fritz, ranked No 10, won against Cameron Norrie (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the Tokyo Open.
