Japan Open: Giron upsets Auger-Aliassime to set up all-American semi-final against Shelton
The American qualifier defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 6-4 on Friday in Tokyo
American qualifier Marcos Giron upset Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 8 seed, 6-1, 6-4 to move into the last four of the Japan Open at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Friday.
Giron, ranked No 79 in the world, will play countryman Ben Shelton next.
The right-handed Giron beat Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (7-6 (14), 4-6, 6-1) and Norwegian Casper Ruud, the second seed (6-3, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the week, Auger-Aliassime, ranked No 17, won against Australian Aleksandar Vukic (7-6 (3), 6-7 (2), 6-2) and Austrian Sebastian Ofner (6-4, 6-1), marking his first back-to-back wins on tour since March.
