Japan Open: Fils edges Shelton in thriller to make semi-finals

Frenchman Arthur Fils moved into the last four of the Japan Open by winning a thriller against American Ben Shelton, the No 8 seed, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2) at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Sunday.
Fils, ranked No 24, will face Dane Holger Rune, the No 6 seed, next.
Earlier in the tournament, the 20-year-old Frenchman won against American Taylor Fritz, the top seed (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) and Italian Matteo Berrettini (6-7 (5), 0-0 ret.).
Shelton, ranked No 17, edged out Reilly Opelka (3-6, 6-1, 6-4) and beat Argentinian Mariano Navone (6-4, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Tokyo Open.
