“It just wasn’t enough and too weak for the level” Thiem back to training as he pulls out of Wimbledon
Still searching for his first win since returning in March, Thiem is sitting out Wimbledon and will train with Rublev & Khachanov in Barcelona this week
Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem has pulled out of Wimbledon and will focus on training for the next two weeks before returning to the tour in early July.
The 28-year-old Thiem came back to the tour in March after nine months on the sidelines due to a wrist injury. The Austrian went 0-7 in tournament play (ATP Tour + ATP Challenger Tour), the most recent of which came at Roland-Garros.
In an interview published by Austrian website Kurier, Thiem said his level upon return was not good enough but he has been making progress since his Paris exit.
“Now so slowly I see my old self coming back on the square. The strokes fit, I’m moving well again, I’m fit and I see really good progress every day. Of course I had to return to competition level at some point. But in retrospect, it just wasn’t enough and too weak for the level, you have to say that honestly.”
“Actually, I’m doing very well, especially since Paris it’s really going up. For two and a half weeks after a few difficult days in Paris, where I had to find my way back into training, it’s fun again,” Thiem added..
Thiem’s expected schedule when he returns will include the ATP Challenger in Salzburg (starting on July 4), followed by ATP Tour events in Baastad, Gstaad and Kitzbühel.
Thiem, ranked No 343 in the world currently, will fly to Barcelona this week where he plans to train with Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov, who are both unable to play at Wimbledon due to the Lawn Tennis Association’s decision to ban Russian & Belarusian players from tournaments in the United Kingdom.
“I’m flying and I’m going to train there (Ed. note – Barcelona) for two weeks with Rublev and Khachanov, among others, which means I have top training partners.”
