Indian Wells Masters: Zverev battles past Griekspoor to move into last 16
The German will play Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 10 seed, in the next round
German Alexander Zverev, the No 6 seed, won against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the No 27 seed, 7-6 (7), 6-3 in one hour and 44 minutes to reach the last 16 of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Sunday.
With the win, Zverev improves to 301 lifetime against Griekspoor. The Dutchman led 5-3 in the first set and even had two set points in the tiebreak but was unable to convert. His frustrations after losing the first set resulted in a racket smash that is now going viral online.
Zverev, ranked No 6, will play Australian Alex de Minaur, the No 10 seed, next. The German holds a 6-2 edge over De Minaur but the Australian won their most recent encounter – at the United Cup earlier this year.
Ahead of his win today, the German defeated Australian Christopher O’Connell (6-4, 6-4).
Griekspoor, ranked No 27, won against German Yannick Hanfmann (6-3, 6-3) in the previous round of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters.
