Indian Wells Masters: Shelton overcomes Cerundolo in deciding set tiebreak to reach last 16
The American will face Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner, the No 3 seed, in the next round
American Ben Shelton, the No 16 seed, moved into the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open by edging out Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 22 seed, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (5) at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Sunday night.
Shelton, ranked No 16, will play Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner, the No 3 seed, next.
The 21-year-old American edged out wildcard Jakub Mensik (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) earlier in the week.
In the previous round of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters, Cerundolo, ranked No 22, benefited from the abandonment of Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko (6-2, 3-1).
