Indian Wells Masters: Former champ Thiem goes down in first round

Former champion Dominic Thiem looked set to advance with a comfortable win over Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the first round of the 2023 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Thursday.

The former US Open champion led by a set and 4-1 before the Frenchman pulled off a strong comeback to win in a third set tiebreak 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) and move into the second round,

Mannarino, ranked No 68 in the world, will play No 19 seed Lorenzo Musetti next.

For Thiem, the loss continues a poor run of form in 2023 after a strong second half of 2022. The Austrian has now lost his last four matches on the tour and has a record of 1-6 on the ATP Tour this year (1-8 if you include Davis Cup matches as well).
