Indian Wells Masters: Defending champ Fritz beats Fucsovics to reach quarter-finals
The American will face the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 11 seed, and Swiss Stan Wawrinka in the next round
Defending champion Taylor Fritz, the No 4 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells Masters on Tuesday by beating Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-3 at the BNP Paribas Open.
The American scored the biggest win of his career here 12 months ago when he ousted Rafael Nadal in the final to win his first ever ATP Masters Series title.
Now Fritz, ranked No 5, is within three matches of repeating that achievement. He will play the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 11 seed, and Swiss Stan Wawrinka next.
The American, who is through to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells for the third year in a row, beat Ben Shelton (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) and Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 30 seed (6-1, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
Fcsovics, ranked No 84, won against American J.J. Wolf (1-6, 6-0, 6-3), Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 16 seed (6-4, 6-2) and Slovak Alex Molcan (6-4, 6-2) earlier in the week.
