Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel defeated Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Indian Wells Masters on Wednesday.
Daniel, ranked No 103, will play No 20 seed Matteo Berrettini next.
