Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, moved into the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells Masters when Jack Draper retired on Tuesday evening at the BNP Paribas Open.
Alcaraz, ranked No 2, led 6-2, 2-0 when Draper, ranked No 56 in the world, pulled out of the fourth round clash due to injury. The win improves Alcaraz’s head-to-head against Draper to 2-0.
The 19-year-old Spaniard will face the winner of the match between American Tommy Paul, the No 17 seed, and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 8 seed, next.
Alcaraz, who now has 101 career wins, won against Australian qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis (6-3, 6-3) and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the No 31 seed (7-6 (4), 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds tournament, Draper defeated Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi (6-1, 6-1), No 24 seed Daniel Evans (6-4, 6-2) and Andy Murray (7-6 (6), 6-2).
