Ruud stunned by Giron in Indian Wells Open second round

American Marcos Giron advanced to the third round of the Indian Wells Masters by winning against Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 4 seed, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday.

Ruud and Giron fought hard for two hours, 41 minutes, exchanging a total of 216 rallies, out of which the American won 111.

The Norwegian notably missed four opportunities to seal the opening set but came back strongly in the second. Giron, however, came out all guns blazing in the decider and nearly dished out a bagel but was broken in the sixth game.

Ruud then saved a match point on serve in the seventh game but Giron prevailed in the eighth.

“It was an amazing win,” the winner said in his post-match interview. “It’ll definitely be one I look back on with amazing memories. To do it here at my favorite tournament is special. This is the one tournament I came to when I was younger. With the home crowd.. it’s an amazing atmosphere.”

Giron, ranked No 48, will play Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 26 seed, next.

The American beat Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili (7-5, 7-6 (3)) in the previous round of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters.
